Youth Leadership Lincoln Kicks Off Its 30th Year with a Powerful Retreat

by Dylan Kitchen

Youth Leadership Lincoln’s 30th cohort launched their program year with a retreat that brought energy, curiosity, and a genuine sense of community. Students representing high schools throughout Lancaster County arrived ready to meet one another, and by the end of the retreat they were already forming the connections that will carry them through the year.

The retreat blended movement, conversation, and reflection in a way that helped students get comfortable quickly. They explored their leadership identities, talked about the values that shape how they show up as individuals and in groups, and worked together in teams to complete a high ropes course (pictured above). It was clear from the start that this cohort is thoughtful and eager to learn.

One of the most meaningful parts of the retreat was watching students build relationships across schools and neighborhoods. This was emphasized at our communal campfire that capped off the first day of the retreat. One student shared, "everyone made me feel like I belonged and I am super excited to be in YLL 30 with everyone this year." Alumni facilitators also joined us, offering guidance and encouragement that helped set a supportive tone for the weekend.

As YLL enters its 30th year, this retreat served as a reminder of why youth leadership matters in Lincoln. The students brought insight, humor, and a willingness to stretch themselves. Their enthusiasm signals a promising year ahead as they begin exploring community issues, civic leadership, and the role they can play in shaping the future of our city.

YLL 30 is officially underway, and we are excited to see where this cohort leads us. Meet the members of YLL 30 by viewing our yearbook page
